HYDERABAD INews Pakistan Reported : Thousands of people have been affected and crops over vast swathes inundated after breaches in poorly-desilted saline drains and choking of poorly-maintained drainage system in towns across Sindh. Sindh Flood Report

According to reports by Dawn correspondents, the death toll in rain-related incidents soared to 57 as three more people were killed in Naushahro Feroze district when roofs and walls of their houses collapsed and two people drowned in Mirpurkhas district.
Thousands of cattle heads were either washed away or died because of non-availability of fodder and drugs.
Experts feared that negligence of the health department could cause spread of waterborne diseases because gutter water mixed with rainwater was stagnant on roads.
The rains caused breakdown of communication system and there was no electricity and gas in many parts of the province.
A flood-like situation multiplied misery of people who were living under open sky, makeshift tents and government buildings.
Pathetic condition in Benazirabad, the home district of President Asif Ali Zardari, and Badin, the home district of former senior minister Zulfikar Mirza, multiplied the miseries of people where intermittent rains caused overflowing of saline drains and flooding of thousands of villages.
About 365 millimetres of rain was recorded during the last four days in Benazirabad district.
The Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) and Ghuni Phulelli Outfall Drain (GPOD) in Badin district overtopped at different places, flooding hundreds of villages and displacing thousands of people.
Villagers said encroachments on saline drains caused flooding. The drains were not properly desilted, they complained.
About 34,000 people were evacuated by the army from different villages in Badin.
The Quaid-i-Awam Engineering University in Benazirabad district’s Nawabshah town was closed for a week because the university premises were completely under rainwater.
Several other government buildings were also under water.
At various places drains caused flooding because they were not desilted properly and their embankments were weak due to negligence of the Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority.
In Naushahro Feroze, people arranged boats on self-help basis to shift the villagers to safer places as almost all government installations, including Moro police station, Mukhtiarkar office and taluka council were inundated. About three feet of water was standing in Moro press club and Mehran Citizen Club.
Prices of vegetables and other food items have increased in almost all rain-hit districts. Ladyfinger and tomatoes were being sold at Rs100 per kg, potato Rs50 per kg and onion Rs40 per kg. Fruits were not available in most markets.
Naushahro Feroze DCO Nazar Mohammad Bozdar said the administration had paid Rs2,500 in compensation to 19 injured and Rs1,000 each to five people’s heirs.
Cotton, sugarcane and other crops on 600,000 acres were destroyed in Benazirabad district alone.
There was a shortage of pumping machines to drain out rainwater from the city.
Pakistan Navy personnel shifted marooned people to safer places.
More than 200 relief camps have been set up in Benazirabad district for the rain-affected people.
In Mirpurkhas, traffic between Jhuddo and Tando Jan Mohammad road remained suspended as the road is under three feet rainwater.

of Jhuddo.
Some parts of dyke near Rahimabad colony were washed away due to pressure in Puran drain and local people are struggling to stop water from entering in Rahimabad colony.
Army soldiers evacuated 250 stranded villagers.
Affected people are deprived of ration due to inadequate supply of relief goods by the government in Mirpurkhas.
People are monitoring dykes themselves as the irrigation and Sida staff have disappeared. Thousands of thatched houses collapsed.
TMAs of Digri, Kot Ghulam Mohammad, Mirpurkhas and Hussain Bux Mari failed to drain out rainwater from towns and low-lying areas.
The district administration was not able to provide ration to affected people. So far only Rs30 million have been provided to district government.
Mir Zafarullah Talpur of Sindh Chamber of Agriculture told Dawn that cotton and other crops had suffered colossal losses and called for rescuing stranded people in Jhuddo and Digri.
The rain caused accumulation of knee-deep water on main roads and streets in city.
Rainwater and sewage accumulated in various localities, forcing residents to leave homes.
About 25,000 houses collapsed while 13,000 houses were partially damaged and 735,000 acres land had been inundated while 322,000 rain-hit people were displaced. About 1,607 villages were wiped out.
In Badin district, water overtopped LBOD and Ghuni Phulelli Outfall Drain at different locations.
Badin DCO Kazim Hussain Jatoi said that a number of relief camps had been raised to 127 from 70 adding that 34,000 people have been rescued from different villages by army.
In Sanghar, rain-affected people held procession at Jamrao Mori near Khadro. They burnt tyres and suspended vehicle traffic for two hours.
Talking to reporters, a landlord Abdul Khaliq Sanjrani said that saline water drain near Khadro had developed breaches at several places, flooding many villages and crops, but neither the district administration nor any elected representative had
visited their area.
