ISPR head voices concern over Karachi Situation : Pakistani News

By staff reporter on Saturday, September 3, 2011 with 0 comments

ISLAMABAD INews Pakistan Reported : The military establishment is sitting uneasy over the way civilian law enforcement agencies (LEAs) are carrying out ‘surgical operations’ against miscreants in Karachi and has demanded an indiscriminate and effective action for restoration of peace.
Speaking to INews Pakistan Specially , ISPR spokesman Maj-Gen Athar Abbas said the military was concerned about the situation because it had affected the whole country. He called for an even-handed and across-the-board action by the civilian LEAs. “It is the duty of LEAs to ensure indiscriminate action against all terrorists and law-breakers to restore peace in the city.” — File Photo
Its discontentment aside, the army, however, is still keeping itself away from the imbroglio.
“The operation should be broad-based and targeted at real culprits,” a senior military official said in a background discussion on the situation in Karachi, where Rangers and police, who were given additional powers, launched an operation on Aug 24 to end violence.
Speaking to Dawn, ISPR spokesman Maj-Gen Athar Abbas said the military was concerned about the situation because it had affected the whole country. He called for an even-handed and across-the-board action by the civilian LEAs. “It is the duty of LEAs to ensure indiscriminate action against all terrorists and law-breakers to restore peace in the city.”
The action by LEAs, Gen Abbas said, was being supported by both civilian and military intelligence agencies and the army hoped that it would be carried out effectively to yield the desired results.
He refused to comment on a statement by former Sindh home minister Zulfikar Mirza that Rehman Malik had warned him the military and the ISI could topple the government if target killers were to be arrested. “It would be appropriate that Mr Malik is contacted for its confirmation or denial,” he added.
The comments came at a time when there was a lull in the killings, giving the impression that the operation in which Interior Minister Rehman Malik claimed that several target killers had been arrested was beginning to corner the outlaws.
The military has so far avoided commenting on the situation in order to spare the civilian authorities’ blushes. But its officials in private discussions have been critical of the way the civilian government has been handling the situation, reflecting the disquiet in their ranks.
Some 1,400 people have been killed in Karachi this year alone. The unrest has caused billions of rupees of losses to the national economy as business and industry in the city frequently come to a standstill because of the law and order situation.
“The operation will have to go deep down for an enduring solution to the problem,” the senior military official said, adding that political elements backing terrorists should be compelled to end their support.
